Jesus is the Water of Life

John Ch7:1-44 Gunnedah Presbyterian Church Sunday the 24th of August 2014  LGS

Intro:  Words have an incredible power to convey meaning.

Consider David Cummings’ Experience:

David worked as a Bible translator for Whycliffe for 6 years in highlands of Papua New Guinne among the Binamari People.  He needed a word for Forgiveness, but was told that in that culture there is no word for Forgiveness.

One day, he was watching a man breaking off a piece of a stick and shoving it into the wall of his hut, intrigued, he asked what it meant.  The owner of the hut said: “There are things this person has done wrong to me, and I’m going to get him back!”  “The stick is like that person and the wrong things they’ve done.  || Suddenly the David knew he’d found the word he needed for forgivness,  Or at least the phrase.  || So gathering the people, he told them this story:  He said: When you and I do something wrong it’s like God shoves a stick into the wall of Heaven.  Like God saying; These people have done this, they will pay for these things.  But, because of His great mercy, God also says to His Son: “I’m going to send you into the world, and I’m going to punish you for all the sticks in the wall that these people have done.  Where does Forgivenss come?  Forgiveness comes when God says; ‘I’m going to take the sticks out of the wall.’ Jesus answers our condemnation and brings forgiveness between us and God.

Words have an incredible power to convey meaning, but the hearer must be able to receive the meaning.

So far in John’s Gospel, there have seen varied responses to Jesus.  John has told us in Ch1 that Jesus’ coming is like light shining into the darkness – but the darkness has not understood it – has not been able to comprehend it, not engaged with it.

Like Lightning connecting the earth and the sky through a dark night, how can the darkness understand light?   On what level can it comprehend it.  Light is heat and expansion, declaration and revelation.  And in Jesus’ coming the light has dawned, His light is not the brief flash of prophet like Moses or Elijah, his coming is the steady strong unflinching glory of God’s presence pushing back the darkness in the brilliant ark of His splendour!

But within the darkness there are differing reactions to the light.  It’s not just that the light is being revealed, but because the light is being revealed something of the darkness also is being revealed.  || Christ is being revealed, || but more and more as we move through this gospel so too are people, and their various shades and attitudes to Christ.

I think sometimes we fall into a comfortable way of thinking about the three years of Jesus ministry, as though it was all pleasant and nice for Him.  As though all He had to do was go on long itinerant ‘hike’ around the countyside, telling a few parables, healing a few unfortunates, having a picnic on a mountainside, going to a wedding, or telling some nice stories to his mates who were walking along with him on the ‘hike’.  But the public ministry of Jesus, His dealing with people, was far more complex and at times heated than just a guided tour would be.

When the charge of the lightning touches the atmosphere, there is heat, there is noise as the light is revealed and also as the darkness into which it is coming is revealed.

There is tension and struggle and turmoil in almost every part of those three years leading ultimately to the Cross.  Where the depths of darkness did its best to forever extinguish the light.  And you see that spark, that expansion, that contest here in chapter 7 of John’s gospel also.

Here we are told here about the incredible hardness of people’s hearts to Jesus.  In Verse 5. || Even His brothers don’t believe in Him!  Despite the way He lived, and spoke, and acted among them.  Even His closest relatives, according to the flesh, don’t believe Him to be the Messiah.  Light is incomprehensible to darkness.  Darkness doesn’t get it!  Darkness by itself will never ‘discover’ light any more than a darkened room can invent electricity or a candle, just by being dark.

People need God to open their hearts to the Gospel. || They need that first spark of the Holy Spirit to bring God’s grace to begin a wonderful work there.  Something different to the darkness has to enter it.  Otherwise the coming of Christ, who He is and what He’s really come to do will never be understood by the natural human heart.  J.R.R Tolkien the writer in his book ‘Lord of the Rings’ Trilogy he often is describing huge immovable stone doors upon which the only way they could be opened or even find the handle to open them was if light shone upon in a certain way.  Many times the Dwarves or Pippin, or Samwise Gangees would want to give up, but Frodo would wait on the light, and its coming would make all the difference.  Well it’s like that with some people.  The darkness in them is like a slab of granite rock, until the light shines upon them and reveals something in them, a chink a gap, a handle, a keyway, the God will use to open their stone cold hearts.

The gospel of a Saviour coming into the world to save sinner like us, to rescue us from this present evil world and from the wrath to come, the wrath that will fall upon all the evil and treacherous, and villainous of the world.  That Gospel of a king who gives his life on a cross to make a way for us, is too ‘out there’ for the darkness in its natural way to make any sense of, but once that illumination of the Spirit come then something truly amazing occurs.  Life comes where there was none before.  Hope rises where hopelessness reigned.  A doorway of light has opened.  Like many of the Jews, these brothers of Jesus don’t in their natural way see these things.  They’d heard Christ’s teaching, they had lived in Christ’s presence and shared meals and travelled with him but that was not enough to make them believers!  No wonder Jesus said back in the chapter before: “No one can come to me unless the father who sent me draw him.”

If you know Jesus Christ as your friend and trust him as your Lord, then you know that that has taken a tremendous work of God to achieve that within you.  You say; ‘But I don’t feel like it was such a profound work, in fact most of the time I hardly feel any different at all’.  But one day you will know.  One day we will know Him as we are known by Him.  But it’s not only the ‘darkness’ of rank unbelief that characterised the dark not comprehending the light. There are other more nuanced reactions to Jesus as well.

We are told in verse 12 that there was widespread murmuring and whispering about Him among the crowds.  Some said, “He is a good man.” Others replied, “No, he deceives the people.”  In verse 15 some of the Jews can’t work out how in the world he could get such knowledge without having ever studied.   In verse 20 some accuse Him of being demon possessed.

In verse 25-27 others murmur among themselves about Jesus origins and whether He could actually be the Christ.  The Pharisees hear what some in the crowd are whispering and send guards to arrest Him.  In verse 40 some say

“Surely this man is the Prophet.”

41Others said, “He is the Christ.”

Still others asked, “How can the Christ come from Galilee? 42Does not the Scripture say that the Christ will come from David’s family and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?”

We see how confused they are and how ill-informed they are.  Of course He was from Bethlehem, but they only knew him growing up in Nazareth.

Verse 43 continues on: 43Thus the people were divided because of Jesus. 44Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.

45Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”

46“No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards declared….

Do you see how the coming of Jesus reveals light, but it also reveals something in the darkness as well?  How many opinions are there of Jesus today?  And how many different religions there are in the world, everyone’s got an opinion, everyone thinks they’re an expert.  And they say; ‘you should tolerate this one’s opinion because it’s just as valid as everyone else’s’!  Mutual ignorance, fallacy built on speculation, Theory dressed as fact.

All sorts of differing opinions about Jesus just the same as there were here in the 1C.  We should realise that whenever the gospel is preached there will be differing kinds of reactions to Christ.  There will be some who believe and then there will be others who have all kinds of nuanced varied differ kinds of greyness, and fluffy thinking, but in the end its just darkness.

What do you think of Jesus?  .

Is Jesus your everything, or is He only part of your everything?  Is the fact that He is interested in you something the thought of which fills you with awe and wonder or does it fill you with dread and trepidation?  Or is it neither of those two emotions, are you just numb without any feeling?  Isn’t that like a kind of darkness anyway?

Which is it light or darkness?

In verse 37 Jesus introduces a diverse way to think about this light/darkness contrast.  He says: “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. 38Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.”

He contrasts Thirst with Satisfaction.  Lack, with Abundant blessing and provision.  Now admittedly we’re not exactly in the middle of Summer heat wave here, quite the opposite, but given a little imagination each of us can picture what it is to have a deep and insatiable thirst.  And to have that met Abundantly, overflowingly, lastingly.  Most of us, would like our heart to be like a deep mountain spring overflowing in rivers of living water.

It’s fitting that Jesus introduces this analogy of water here at the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles (or Booths), because water featured large in this festival.  It was a reminder among things of the peoples time in the wilderness, how God provided water for them out of a rock face.  Also people of this time knew only too well that to lack water was to shortly fade away and die.  Water too was associated also with washing and holiness and a new start.

Jesus words also tie in with what He said to the Woman at the Well back in Chapter 4, where He said: “Whoever drinks this water that I shall give him shall never thirst, but the water I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

The sense of complete abundant satisfaction.  How can the dryness understand the water?  As soon as the water touches it, it changes.  Dryness is melted, coolness liquefied, drenching our heat, refreshment, life effervescent, Moisture, growth and Newness.  But does Jesus paint these pictures so we’ll just be impressed, and maybe give him a Job as a speech writer for up and coming politician of the day, is this just flowery conversation the way Shakespeare or Jane Austin would use it?  No.  These words and descriptions of life by Jesus are meant to expose not only who He is, but also to expose something in us, namely our need of the lasting things that He alone gives.  He calls us to engage with something so different it will forever change us, and change us in the best possible ways.

“If anyone is thirsty,  Spiritual thirst.

If anyone is serious about relating to God, has a desire for their spiritual thirst to be met, if anyone is aware that they of all people, that they themselves need a Saviour.  They should come to Him.  And He will meet that need beyond their wildest dreams.

If anyone knows that they above all else need to be forgiven, need a second chance, need to make amends then they are thirsty.  Come to the water and drink!  Believe and rivers will flow!

People thirst for all kinds of things, but almost none of those things give one drop of satisfaction.  But Jesus will.  Jesus says “come to me all you who are weak and heaven laden, and I will give you rest.”  He offers fresh water, sparkling water, life-giving water drawn from Heaven.

Until we know that we are lost we can not comprehend being found.  Until we know that we’ve been blind, we cannot comprehend seeing with new eyes.  Until we know that we’ve been destitute, we can’t comprehend what it is for Jesus to be our shield and portion  for all eternity.

“If anyone is thirsty,

let him come to me and drink.   Jesus says.
